Faith Formation for Children & Teens
-a Definition of Programs
- Faith Formation (comprehensive Religious Education)
Children / Families (grades PK-6 and their Families)
Provides a basic, general understanding of our faith by focusing on the teachings of Jesus and the Catholic Church, and helps children and families develop a personal connection to Christ, his Church, and to one another.
- Youth Ministry (COMPREHENSIVE RELIGIOUS Education)
Jr. High (grades 7-8) & Sr. High (grades 9-12)
Provides a general, overall faith formation including components of service & socializing. This is a great venue to keep teens connected with their faith and grow spiritually while serving the community. Includes parish and diocesan retreat opportunities.
- Sacramental Preparation Programs
First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, & Confirmation
Offers a time to focus specifically on understanding a particular sacrament before celebrating it. It is set outside of, over and above general Faith Formation classes/sessions, with a specific focus on a particular sacrament. For Catholic school students not enrolled in a parish religious education program, the preparation and celebration of a sacrament takes place in the parish of registration.
Requirements before celebrating First Reconciliation and First Eucharist:
The child must be baptized and have attended at least 2 full, consecutive years of active participation in a parish faith formation program or Catholic school.
Requirements before celebrating Confirmation:
The teen must be baptized, and enters into a 2-year preparation period (called “Proximate Preparation”) at the beginning of 7th or 8th grade that is included in a parish faith formation program or Catholic school. Celebration of the sacrament is at the end of 9th grade, after participation in several parish-based sessions (called “Immediate Preparation”) not offered in the parish faith formation program or at Catholic school. For Catholic school students not enrolled in a parish religious education program, the preparation and celebration of a sacrament takes place through the parish of registration.
- Liturgy of the Word for Children at Mass (at Holy Ghost Sundays 9:00am & 11:30am)
is a part of the Mass designed for children ages 4-12 years. After the Opening Prayer at the beginning of Mass, the children are invited to leave the congregation of adults to hear the Liturgy of the Word done in a way that they, as children, can better understand. They return to worship with the rest of the congregation in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
- Vacation Bible School for Children grades PK-6
is five days in the summer of crafts, music, and Bible adventures set within a fun theme to teach children about God’s presence in their lives. This does not take the place of the Two-Week Summer or the Sunday Family Faith Formation programs.
